Bart Willaert is Executive Vice President for Open Finance for the Americas at Mastercard. He oversees the development and build-out of new products and technologies to unlock an open data future rooted in innovation, security and inclusion across a global ecosystem. Bart has previously led Mastercard’s Open Finance services in the APMEA region, focusing on the design, development and the commercialization of digital payments and data services powered by Open Finance in European and Australian markets.
Bart has extensive experience leading new product strategy, design and commercialization across different markets globally. Bart was previously Mastercard’s Executive Vice President for Fintech Processing solutions and Global Digital Market Solutions & Deployment. In these roles, he led the strategy, development, commercialization and optimization for various new digital solutions and worked with fintechs, financial institutions and key retailers across the region.
Bart joined Mastercard in 2009 and has held a range of roles of increasing responsibility, including General Manager for the Nordics & Baltics and the French markets, as well leading Mastercard customer economics center for the European region.
Prior to joining Mastercard, Bart was Project Leader with The Boston Consulting Group and worked as founder of a technology startup. Bart holds a degree of Commercial Engineer in Business Informatics from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Open banking was sold on a promise: APIs would unlock innovation, data sharing would empower consumers, and banks would discover new revenue streams. Five years in, the results are mixed.
